I think I nearly had a heart attack cause I couldn’t imagine sleepless nights of hardwork, varnishing into thin air; just like that.
As entrepreneurs who have an online presence specifically made to facilitate our business, we have to take extra caution when it comes to cyber attack. It can happen to anyone no matter how savvy you might claim. According to statistics, over 4 billion of the world population uses the Internet and this is enough evidence to assert that your business is as vulnerable as a bubble. Even the air can be a danger.
Every day, hackers are discovering new ways to explore loopholes and weakness, then capitalizing on it to steal information from our computer or online sites, even crash down a business with just a push of a button.
Believe me, as your business grow, so does your enemies. In this article, i’m going to enlighten you on how to prepare for the worst and bounce back stronger whenever the inevitable strike. If you can know these five ways you can protect your business from cyber attack in heart, you’ll be in business for a very long time.
5 Ways to Protect Your Business From Cyber Attack
1. Strong password
When it comes to the password of your computer, website or blog, it has to be very difficult to crack. This is one of the best ways to protect your business from cyber attack. Use a password that’s long and difficult.. Mix them up with Caps, numbers, symbols and jargons.
We are usually fond of using the same password for almost all our social handles and sites, probably for easy remembrance. It’s very wrong. When it comes to your business, you need to be wise and use something that will even give you a tough time to crack.
One of the mistake we usually make is writing these passwords down, perhaps in a diary or jotter. If you do that, then you’re not really secured. No one, I mean, no one should know the password but you.. Not even your books. Also make it a habit to change your passwords once in a while..
2. Blacklist Harmful Sites/Apps
There are lots of sites or apps in our cyberspace that does more harm than good. Some of the apps or softwares we usually install sometimes comes with ridiculous permission to some classified data in our system.
I have some classified data in my mobile phone, so the first thing i check on whenever I’m installing a new software or app from a store is the App’s permission.. If I discovered that they have access to my messages, GPS, contacts, mails etc, I won’t install at all. If I’m to install, I will make sure i modify these permissions immediately in the settings.
Some sites, especially porn sites can be very harmful. If you must use them, make sure you’re using a computer or phone that isn’t used for business.
Most of the antivirus softwares we use are virus themselves. Make sure you use a software that’s highly recommended and have been tested to work overtime. Even if they cost money, go ahead. It’s better to pay for the software and be safe, than to use a free software that brings doom closer to your business.
Firewall security on the other hand is like a guard, who’s always online to safeguard whatever goes in and out of the computer. Make sure you’re using the latest version.
4. Always update
Don’t forget to always update your operating system, antivirus software, firewall, plugins etc. These updates usually come whenever a bug have been fixed or when there’s a new powerful functionality that helps improves the performance and security. Protect your business from cyber attacks by making sure all your softwares are up to date.
When cyber bullies, hackers, attackers etc discover a new way to hack into a system or software, developers of such softwares will fix the loophole immediately and release the updated version. If you’re using an old version, then you’ll be vulnerable to attack.
5. Always Backup
When O3techy was attacked, what saved me was my backup. Yes, that attack made me lose all my data.. Because I was security conscious, I had a plugin that backup every data everyday, saving them in my dropbox account. The best way to protect your business is through routine backups. Whenever you’re attacked, you won’t worry about lost of data cause you have backups already.
I know about a lot of business websites and blogs that quit simply because they lost their files and had no backup.. Imagine losing years of hardwork, no backup whatsoever. That’s enough to make a man commit suicide.
Finally, we don’t pray to be hacked, but it’s one of these Inevitable that can’t be escaped. When we are hacked, it shows that indeed, we’re growing. However, it becomes a nightmare if we’re unprepared.
As we think of growing our business online, especially here in Nigeria, we should also think on how to protect our business from cyber attacks. When we are succeeding in business, some individuals somewhere are not happy. If you have any question, use the comment box.
